Harvesting Engagement Sessions

Posted on:

Métis harvesters and citizens, we want to hear from you!

As a citizen of the Nation, we invite you to attend one of the upcoming engagement sessions on harvesting. We value and need your feedback.

The Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) and the Government of Alberta (GoA) are jointly reviewing the existing Métis Harvesting in Alberta policy (the policy). The policy was put into place by the GoA unilaterally in 2007 to replace the Interim Métis Harvesting Agreement, and updated in 2010. Now, the GoA and the MNA have agreed to collaborate in reviewing this policy in order to facilitate recognition for Métis rights in Alberta, uphold the honour of the Crown, and advance reconciliation.

We would like to extend an invitation to attend an engagement session listed in the table below. Please come enjoy a coffee and light meal, and meet with us to talk about Métis harvesting in Alberta. The Métis citizen registration team will also be on site to assist with citizenship applications.

To register, contact:
Katie Suvanto
(780) 455-2200 Ext. 235.

Why Not Southern Alberta?

The Government of Alberta’s Cabinet Mandate does not allow for discussions on a harvesting area in southern Alberta presently, based on the Hirsekorn case heard in the Alberta Court of Appeal.

The MNA is committed to continuing to advocate for Métis harvesting rights throughout the Province, including southern Alberta, and will be hosting a meeting in Lethbridge.

To learn more about the harvesting situation in southern Alberta and what the MNA is doing, please read our statement
