Métis Nation of Alberta Represented at First Ministers Meeting with Indigenous Leaders

Posted on:

Edmonton, AB – Monday, March 14, 2016

On Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016, Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) President Audrey Poitras participated in the First Ministers Meeting on Climate Change. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended invitations to the three Aboriginal leaders identified in Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 including the Métis National Council (MNC), Assembly of First Nations (AFN) and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) who gathered to offer input into Canada’s Climate Change and Clean Growth Strategy.

Regarding the meeting outcome, President Audrey Poitras stated that “I am happy with today’s initial meeting. In order for there to be a meaningful positive impact on climate change, the Métis Nation must play a key role and be at the table with Canada and the Provinces as a full partner.”

The meeting is indicative of meaningful action behind the Liberals’ pledge to work collaboratively with the Métis Nation to address climate change. It is a sign that the door is open for future Nation-to-Nation collaboration to promote the advancement of Métis rights.

Friends,

Over the past few months, we have been meeting with MNA Regional and Local leadership to garner their input into the development of a framework for a Government of Alberta (GoA) Métis consultation policy. To this end, the MNA has assembled a technical working group (TWG) that will assist the Provincial Office in carrying out its functions to develop a framework that guides the MNA in its development of a made in Alberta Métis consultation policy.

The MNA will be providing insight into the feedback received from this particular round of consultations at the business mixer and I encourage early registration to confirm your participation in this event.

Kind Regards

Audrey Poitras
