Living Fiddle Legends

Riel Aubichon

Originally from BC, Riel is a Métis fiddler with his own take on the tunes. Riel loves all fiddle styles but mostly plays Métis, old time and bluegrass styles. He has composed dozens of tunes that get played across the country. He is still active in the community, and we are very excited to have him share his talents within the community.

Patti Kusturok

Growing up in Manitoba, Patti was surrounded by players like Mel Bedard, Garry Lepine, and has recorded an album with the late Reg Bouvette. Patti continues to instruct and pass on her gift of music. She is often referred to as one of the smoothest fiddle players in North America due to her effortless delivery. Patti learned to play the fiddle at the age of 4 and is the first women in the history of Canada to win the prestigious Canadian Grand Master Fiddling Championship and has captured the Grand North American Championship three times. As a member of the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame, this year marks 50 years of fiddling for Patti. Check out her social media for 366 Days of Fiddle Tunes!

Garry Lepine

No one plays with more heart and danceability than Garry. Hailing from Manitoba, Garry Lepine started playing the fiddle at the age of 2 and has since played for every square dance group and dance group imaginable. When Garry plays the fiddle, he displays true Métis culture and feeling. It is very important to Garry to have the tradition of fiddle playing and keeping it going. Garry was inducted into the Manitoba Fiddle Association Hall of Fame. We are truly blessed to have him join us for Alberta Métis Fest.

Calvin Vollrath

Known as “The God Father of Canadian Fiddle”. Calvin has immersed himself with Métis fiddlers such as John Arcand, Richard Calihoo and Gilbert Anderson and is a true product of what happens when you have a true love for a culture and its music. Calvin carries on the feel of all the Métis players that came before him. At the age of 8, Calvin received his first fiddle and has since become a world-class fiddler representing Alberta and Canada internationally. Calvin has composed nearly 700 tunes including 5 fiddle tunes for the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Calvin is electric on stage, his love for music is contagious and we can’t wait for him to bring everyone in the audience to their feet!
