Women’s History Month

Posted on: Oct 01, 2026

October is Women’s History Month: a time to honour the women whose courage, determination, and leadership have shaped our families and communities.

For the Métis Nation, the story of our women is inseparable from the story of our people.

From the matriarchs who helped build and sustain the early Métis communities of the Homeland, to the mothers, aunties, and kokums who carried our culture and language forward, to the women who stood alongside their families and communities through times of immense change and hardship. Métis women have always been the foundation of our nation.

Our history was also built by the women whose work was often unseen: the women who raised children, cared for Elders, created community, preserved traditions, organized, advocated, and made sure that the next generation knew who they were and where they came from.

Today, Métis women continue that legacy.

We see it in our elected leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, educators, harvesters, caregivers, Knowledge Keepers, advocates, volunteers, and young women who are finding their voices and making space for themselves and others in underrepresented industries.

We also recognize that honouring women’s history means acknowledging the work that remains. Women and girls continue to face barriers to leadership, safety, economic opportunity, and full participation in what our province has to offer.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let us not only look backward, let us look forward.

Let us mentor the next generation. Let us open doors for one another. Let us make room at the table, and when there is no table, let us build one together.

Because our history is not finished, it is being written. And the women and girls of the Métis Nation are not simply part of our history.

They are our present. They are our future. And they are still making history.

Métis women everywhere are exemplifying what girls can strive to become.

To every Métis woman and girl: thank you for the ways you lead, the ways you serve, the ways you care, and the ways you carry our Nation forward.

This Women’s History Month, we honour those who came before us, stand beside those leading today, and make the path wider for those who will come after us.

Happy Women’s History Month.
