Métis Citizens help shape the work ahead at 2026 Citizens’ Gathering with 28 Citizens’ Proposals

SLAVE LAKE — After two days of conversations, questions, and proposals from Métis Citizens across Alberta, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government concluded its 2026 Citizens’ Gathering at Slave Lake on August 22 with a clear focus on continuing to build a government that works for its Citizens.
28 Citizens’ Proposals were brought to the floor, and every one of them was adopted.
The Gathering brought Citizens together with elected leadership and teams from across government to take stock of the work accomplished over the past year, discuss the priorities ahead, and have a direct say in the work of their government.
“This government belongs to our Citizens,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “They came here ready to ask questions, share their ideas, and tell us what they expect from us. That is how our government gets stronger.”
A major focus of the Gathering was the continued work of putting self-government into practice. 16 District Councils are now fully operational, with more on the way, strengthening local governance and giving Citizens a stronger voice in their communities.
Citizens also heard about the government’s work to advance Métis rights and self-government. Work with Canada continues on the Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement and the modern-day Treaty Canada committed to. Provincially, the government continues to push for a real seat at the table on major projects and decisions affecting the Métis Nation within Alberta.
“Our Métis Citizens are who we are gathering for,” said President Sandmaier. “We look forward to discussing and debating the proposals brought forward out the Citizens’ Council Table.”
The 2026 Citizens’ Gathering continued a 98-year tradition of Métis Citizens coming together to speak up for their rights and shape the future of their Nation.
