Michelle Fournie Sworn in as the New District Captain for the Rocky View Métis District

Edmonton, AB – The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is excited to welcome its newest District Captain. Michelle Fournie was sworn in as the new District Captain for the Rocky View Métis District.
“On behalf of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, I want to congratulate Michelle Fournie on her election and swearing-in to serve the Citizens of the Rocky View Métis District,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “While we take a moment to reflect on the late Captain Amber Boyd, we are also glad that Captain Fournie, and others stepped up to serve our Citizens. I have no doubt that she will be successful.”

District Captain Michelle Fournie’s biography
Michelle Fournie (Dennis) comes from the Dennis, St. Denis, Pagé, Desmarais, Rochon, Laviolette, Moreau, Ducharme and Lyons families. Her family roots run through Red River, St. François Xavier, Portage la Prairie, Fort Qu’Appelle and Lebret. Her ancestors followed the buffalo hunts and helped build the Métis communities of the Qu’Appelle Valley.
Michelle brings almost two decades of experience in education, communications, community engagement and Indigenous relations. She was Valedictorian and holds a Bachelor of Public Relations from Mount Royal University, a land-based graduate certificate and graduate diploma, and a Master of Educational Research from the University of Calgary. She is the founder and practice lead of Sacred Four Communications, an Indigenous-owned and operated social enterprise consulting firm grounded in relational accountability and Ethical Space.
Named one of Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40, Michelle weaves humour, poetry, and Indigenous scholarship into her areas of practice as gifts to share. Reciprocal service opportunities have included Co-Chair of the City of Calgary’s Indigenous Urban Affairs Committee, Co-Chair of the Government of Alberta’s Métis Women’s Economic Council, Co-Chair of the Indigenous Gathering Place Society of Calgary, Manager of the Iniikokaan (Buffalo Lodge) Centre at Bow Valley College, and Indigenous Learning Guide with Forum Community Relations’ cultural agility training program, Niso’kawaiksi (All My Relations).
Michelle lives with her family in Chestermere, Alberta, in the Rocky View Métis District within the Northwest Métis Homeland and Battle River Territory, honours our role in respecting the traditional territory of the Niitsitapi, and upholding both oral and written promises to the Signatories of Treaty #7.
