Pakoshayimoohk (Hope Village) Moves Forward, Creating a Life-Changing Continuum of Care for Métis Citizens and Albertans in Recovery

EDMONTON, AB — The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is taking another significant step toward transforming Métis health and wellness with the advancement of Pakoshayimoohk (Hope Village), a Métis-led supportive housing development designed to help individuals maintain long-term recovery and rebuild their lives.
Located in Edmonton’s Blatchford community, Hope Village is the realization of a vision developed through the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Health Department, and executed by the Métis Capital Housing Corporation, to create a comprehensive continuum of care for individuals experiencing addiction and substance use challenges. The project is being developed in partnership with the City of Edmonton and the Government of Alberta.
The Government of Alberta has committed $21.25 million in capital funding toward the project, while the City of Edmonton has contributed $6 million through the Affordable Housing Investment Program (AHIP), as well as a provision of a 92,075-square-foot parcel of land in Blatchford for a nominal cost. Together, these investments are helping bring to life a first-of-its-kind model that integrates addiction recovery, supportive housing, cultural connection, and long-term wellness.
Through this integrated model, individuals will begin their healing journey at New Beginnings, an acute stabilization and pre- and post-recovery transitional housing facility operated through the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Health Department in partnership with Stone Bear Recovery. Participants will then continue treatment at the Recovery Centre in Smoky Lake before transitioning to Hope Village, where they will receive ongoing support, stable housing, and community connections as they work toward long-term independence and sobriety.

It is about ensuring that people who are ready to begin their recovery journey have somewhere to go, somewhere to heal, and somewhere to build a future. We thank the City of Edmonton and the Government of Alberta for working with our government to make this vision a reality.”

Without stable housing and continued support, individuals can face significant barriers that put their recovery at risk,” said Provincial Secretary of Health & Seniors Kaila Mitchell. “This project will transform lives by giving people the opportunity to heal, reconnect with culture, and build a strong foundation for the future.”

The Métis Capital Housing Corporation thanks its construction partners, Brian Alsopp Architects Ltd. for providing continuous support with design and engineering consulting as the Prime Consultant and Synergy Projects Ltd as the General Contractor.
The facility will offer a range of amenities and supports designed to foster wellness, belonging, and community engagement. Residents will have access to cultural activities and ceremonies, a community kitchen, gathering spaces, a full-size gymnasium, pickleball court, rooftop patio, and outdoor spaces designed to support cultural programming and community activities.
Once complete, Hope Village will stand as a leading example of Indigenous-led innovation in health, housing, and recovery services. By providing a pathway from stabilization and treatment to supportive housing and independence, the development will help ensure more people have the opportunity to achieve lasting recovery and build healthy, fulfilling lives.
