Statement by the Citizens’ Council of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government
Posted on: Jun 25, 2026
Following meetings held last week in Edmonton where confidential information and documentation was provided to Citizens’ Council, including privileged legal advice, a series of unanimous resolutions were passed and direction was provided for this statement to be released.
Citizens’ Council confirms that Mr. Aaron Barner is no longer employed as the Senior Executive Officer (SEO) of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government effective immediately.
Citizens’ Council has also directed that options for an Acting SEO, who possesses exceptional skills and qualifications, be identified on an immediate basis for consideration and potential appointment. In addition, a public recruitment process for a permanent SEO will be initiated soon.
To ensure the uninterrupted and efficient operations of the provincial Administration while a SEO is recruited, an Interim Approach to Ensuring Ongoing, Accountable and Efficient Operations of the Administration of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government has been put into place. This approach ensures strong financial and accountability mechanisms are in place and respects our Constitution, Métis Government Laws and the important work the provincial Administration, which includes hundreds of staff located across Alberta, does on behalf of the Nation.
Given this situation involves issues that engage employment, privacy and legal matters, Citizens’ Council is unable to provide any further details and will not be commenting further.
