Otipemisiwak Métis Government Welcomed Citizens to Second Annual Métis Games Festival in Calgary

Posted on: May 19, 2026

CALGARY — This weekend, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government welcomed Métis youth, families, and Citizens from across Alberta to Calgary for the second annual Métis Games Festival.

The Métis Games Festival brings together young athletes from across the province to compete in a variety of sports while celebrating Métis culture, identity, community, and artisans. The event focuses on creating opportunities for Métis youth to connect with one another, build confidence, and strengthen their ties to community through sport and cultural celebration.

“The Métis Games Festival is about much more than competition,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “They are about bringing our Citizens together, creating opportunities for youth to connect to their culture, and celebrating the strength and resilience of the Métis Nation. Events like the Métis Games Festival carry that spirit of resilience and pride forward.”

Throughout the weekend, participants took part in sporting events, cultural activities, and community gatherings that highlighted the importance of teamwork, leadership, and wellness.

The Métis Games Festival continues a long tradition of Métis communities coming together to share stories and celebrate culture across generations.

“These games represent more than sport alone. They are part of our Métis government’s broader commitment to youth well-being, inclusion, and access,” said Secretary for Youth, Sport, and Gender Equity, Rebecca Lavallee. “Through sport and community, young people strengthen their connection to culture, build confidence, and develop skills that will carry forward into every part of their lives”

The Métis Games Festival is part of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting Métis youth, health and wellness, and community connection across Alberta.
