Secretary Spotlight: Lisa Wolfe

Posted on: Apr 17, 2026

Lisa Wolfe, Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Provincial Secretary of Education, Training, and Veteran Affairs, is a proud Métis woman, wife, mother of four, and kokum of two. Lisa is Métis on both sides of her family. She has deep Métis heritage throughout Northern Alberta and the North-West Territories. Raised in Lac La Biche and Edmonton, Lisa grew up immersed in Métis culture, learning traditions, values, and dancing. She is creative and enjoys beadwork, hand-sewing moccasins, gauntlet gloves, and working with leather, furs, and other mediums. She is a harvester and makes Métis Harvesting rights a priority in Alberta.

As a youth, she joined the Edmonton Air Cadet program, which taught her leadership, mentorship, and instructional techniques in the Military. Secretary Wolfe is a Veteran (Lieutenant) from the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves (CAF), and she uses her experiences to guide her in everyday life.

In 1993, she was pre-hired by the Edmonton Police Service. After 30 years of dedicated service, she retired in 2023 and joined the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. Throughout her career, she worked in various departments such as Downtown Patrol, Restorative Justice, Aboriginal and Diversity Recruitment, and Major Case Management and Investigations. She retired from the Missing Persons Unit in April 2023 and moved to the community of Lac Ste. Anne County.

Veteran Affairs:

Within the last year, Lisa has been proud to work with the Veterans Affairs Portfolio. She has attended the Annual Veterans Wellness Gathering each year in partnership with Métis National Council at Métis Crossing and in Vancouver.

She participated in the ‘2025 Honouring her Service: National Women Veteran Forum’ in Ottawa, where she listened to the stories of women who served.

The funding for the second half of our Métis Veteran’s Monument at Métis Crossing was secured in the fall of 2025, allowing more than 2500 Métis families to be able to add their Métis Veterans to the long list of heroes in our community.

Over the past year, Lisa has strengthened relationships with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and reviewed stories and photos of the brave Métis soldiers who fought for our freedom in Canada. One of the highlights was finding a never-before-seen photo of Sgt. Alex Decoteau in uniform, overseas with his regiment. This photo will be unveiled later this year at the National Indigenous Veteran’s Day at Métis Crossing on November 8, 2026.

Secretary Lisa Wolfe also attended the new Canadian Forces Patch Design Grand Unveiling for members of the purge, who were dishonourably discharged from the CAF.

Education and Training:

The mandate for Education and Training is focused on promoting educational opportunities and enhancing skills development for Métis Citizens in Alberta. One of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Institutions, Rupertsland Institute, aims to support academic achievement, cultural preservation, and labour market participation through education, training, and research.

This is inclusive of the following areas:

  • Educational Access & Equity-Access to quality education, at all levels from K-12 and beyond.
  • Cultural Integration- Métis culture, language, and history into educational curriculums to ensure cultural preservation.
  • Skills Development- vocational and skills-based training that aligns with the labour market needs.
  • Support Services- scholarship, mentorship, and counselling services to assist Métis students in their educational journey.
  • Partnerships- with educational institutions across the Province of Alberta and other Federal Government bodies to expand resources for Métis learners. Promoting the needs for current and future funding opportunities.

Over the past year, Lisa has attended countless education and training events, forums, conventions, and conferences to further her knowledge and understanding of current academic experiences. She encourages all ages to pursue education and to utilize the programs and funding that are available to Métis Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. The Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards and the Indspire Awards are a testament to the success of our Citizens, and Lisa always looks forward to attending to cheer our Citizens on! During Graduation time, she travels across Alberta alongside our Elders and Knowledge Keepers to hand out Métis Sashes to Métis students who graduate from high school. She also attends the graduation ceremonies for post-secondary institutions such as NAIT, Norquest College, and the University of Alberta.
