Secretary Spotlight: Kaila Mitchell, Secretary of Health, Wellbeing and Seniors

Posted on: Jun 12, 2026

Secretary Kaila Mitchell’s leadership is shaped by a strong connection to her Métis identity, a passion for community advocacy, and a commitment to improving the wellbeing of Métis Citizens. A proud two-spirit Métis woman with family roots in Lac Ste. Anne, Jasper House, and the Michel Band, she grew up on a ranch near Marlboro and brings both lived experience and extensive policy expertise to her role with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

As Secretary responsible for Health, Wellness and Seniors, Mitchell has focused on advancing Métis-led solutions that address the unique needs of Citizens while strengthening relationships with provincial, national, and international partners. Her work reflects a belief that Métis people are best positioned to guide the programs and services that affect their communities.

One of the most significant achievements during the past year was securing operational funding for the Healing Waters Recovery Community. Through ongoing engagement with government officials and advocacy on behalf of Citizens, Mitchell helped secure $1.32 million to support 12 additional recovery beds. The investment expands access to culturally grounded recovery services and strengthens supports available to Métis individuals and families on their healing journeys.

Mitchell has also elevated Métis perspectives on health at forums across Canada and beyond. She represented the Otipemisiwak Métis Government at international discussions hosted by the World Health Organization, advocating for Métis-specific approaches to health care, data sovereignty, and sustainable investments in Indigenous health systems. She also participated in national health discussions in Ottawa and contributed to conversations on culturally safe care at the Canadian Cancer Research Conference in Calgary.

Closer to home, Mitchell has worked to ensure Métis voices are reflected in broader health system improvements. Her efforts have supported initiatives focused on cultural safety, anti-racism, and Métis-specific health programming, while strengthening partnerships that improve access to services and supports for Citizens.

Throughout her work, Mitchell remains committed to hearing directly from Citizens and responding to their priorities. Issues such as access to health services, medical travel, recovery supports, and seniors’ wellbeing continue to guide her advocacy and decision-making.

For Secretary Mitchell, success is measured by the impact felt in communities. Whether advocating for new investments, strengthening partnerships, or supporting frontline health initiatives, her focus remains on creating a health system that respects Métis culture, promotes healing, and supports Citizens at every stage of life.
