Brooke Bramfield – Provincial Secretary of Children & Family Services
Secretary Brooke Bramfield is a proud member of the Callihoo family and has called Fort McMurray home since 2013. Drawing on a background in communications, government relations, and grant writing, along with previous experience at the McMurray Métis, she has dedicated her work to strengthening supports for Métis children and families across Alberta.
Since becoming Secretary of Children & Family Services in October of 2023, Secretary Bramfield has helped advance the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s vision of a children and family services system designed by Métis, for Métis. Her work has focused on ensuring that Métis children remain connected to their families, culture, language, and community while building the foundation for future Métis-led services.
One of the department’s most significant achievements has been advancing work related to Bill C-92, supporting the development of a Métis-specific children and family services framework that reflects the values, traditions, and priorities of Métis Citizens. Through ongoing collaboration with Citizens, Elders, youth, community organizations, and government partners, the department continues to build the relationships and governance structures necessary to exercise Métis jurisdiction over children and family services.
Secretary Bramfield has also played a leading role in strengthening government governance through the advancement of the Protection of Personal Information and Privacy Act. This legislation enhances privacy protections, promotes responsible information management, and establishes important safeguards that will support the future delivery of Children and Family Services programs and other government services.
As a member of the Children and Family Services Advisory Committee, Secretary Bramfield has supported the development of a culturally grounded model of care that prioritize prevention, family preservation, and early intervention. The department continues to advocate for approaches that reduce the number of Métis children entering government care while expanding access to culturally relevant supports that help families remain together.
Building on this progress, the department’s focus will be on advancing the implementation of Métis-led children and family services under Bill C-92 while continuing to strengthen prevention and early intervention initiatives that support families before challenges escalate. Future work will also include expanding culturally grounded foster care, kinship care, adoption, and family reunification initiatives that keep Métis children connected to their identity, culture, and community.
The department will continue to work collaboratively with health, education, and community partners to improve access to coordinated services and create stronger support networks for Métis families throughout Alberta. By investing in partnerships and community-based programming, the department aims to empower Métis children and families with the resources they need to thrive while reinforcing the values of kinship, culture, and shared responsibility that are central to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s vision for future generations.
Throughout her tenure, Secretary Bramfield has remained actively engaged with Citizens through community gatherings, government events, and regional meetings. These conversations continue to shape the department’s priorities and ensure that its work reflects the voices and experiences of Métis families across Alberta.
