Métis Citizens gather in Slave Lake to celebrate 98th year of gathering

SLAVE LAKE — For nearly a century, Métis Citizens from across Alberta have come together to speak up for their rights, support one another and have a say in their future. That tradition continues August 21 and 22, as Citizens gather in Slave Lake for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s 2026 Citizens’ Gathering. We appreciate the Lesser Slave Lake Métis District as they welcome us tonight, August 20th, with a BBQ.
This year marks the 98th year Citizens have come together as a Métis government, and the third Citizens’ Gathering since the first Otipemisiwak Métis Government was elected in 2023.
“For 98 years, our Citizens have continued to gather, support one another and stand up for our right to decide our own future,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “There is something special about coming together, surrounded by Métis Citizens from across Alberta, to continue that tradition.”
Over the two-day gathering from August 21 to 22, Citizens will hear directly from their government, ask questions of leadership, bring forward proposals, and take part in conversations about the work underway and where their government goes next.
There is plenty to discuss. 15 District Councils are now fully operational, with more on the way. Every investment made through the Métis Education Foundation is now a $40 million dollar investment in our people—supporting Métis scholars today while building stronger communities and opportunities for generations to come.
The government is also continuing its work with Canada on the Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement and a modern-day Treaty, while working to ensure the Métis Nation within Alberta has a real seat at the table on decisions and major projects that affect Citizens and their communities.
The Gathering follows months of conversations with Citizens across Alberta. Through the Kitchen Party Tour, the government visited 13 communities, bringing leadership directly to Citizens for music, dancing and hours of conversation about their priorities, concerns and what they want to see from their government.
“This is their Métis government,” said President Sandmaier. “The Gathering is a chance for Citizens to ask questions, share their ideas and help shape what we build together.”
