Secretary Spotlight: Jason Ekeberg, Provincial Secretary of the Treasury

Jason Ekeberg brings decades of lived experience and leadership to his role as Provincial Secretary of the Treasury. A familiar face within the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, Jason served as Regional Vice-President for Region 1 under the former Métis Nation of Alberta and was elected in 2023 as the Citizens’ Representative for the Lac La Biche Métis District.

His connection to the Lac La Biche region runs deep. His family has lived, worked, and harvested there for over a century. Today, he continues those traditions with his own family, operating a farm and maintaining a traditional trapline. Whether it’s hunting, trapping, or fishing, Jason embodies the values and practices passed down through generations.

He is a proud descendant of the Pruden and Cardinal families, a father of three, and a grandfather of two. His commitment to community includes founding a camp for individuals experiencing homelessness, with six safe shelters offering day-to-day programming.

As Secretary of the Treasury, Jason’s role is outlined in the section 79 of the Self-Government Act. His duties outlined in the Act include that the Provincial Secretary of the Treasury must:

  • cause to be kept full and accurate account of receipts, disbursements, and books of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government;
  • cause to be deposited, all monies and other valuables or effects in the name and to the credit of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government in such chartered banks or other financial institutions as designated by the Citizens’ Council;
  • give a financial report at the Citizens’ Gathering;
  • review all expenses of Representatives; and
  • perform any other duty assigned to them under an Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law or regulation.

Jason’s goal is to ensure that every Citizen can understand how resources are being used to support the Nation and trust that they’re being managed with care.
